Toast Interior
Albano Daminato

Instantly recognizable by their playful yet sophisticated design concept
and inspired colour scheme, the interiors for the Toast brand of cafes are
the work of designer Albano Daminato. Whilst clearly from the same stable
as her older siblings by the same designer, Pierside Kitchen + Bar, and
The Marmalade Pantry, Toast is the witty younger sister.

Creating an environment wrapped in milky baby pink tiles, the interiors
are inspired by pastel coloured cake frosting and 1950's kitchen melamine
colours - these provide a perfect foil for architectural elements, benches
and thick table tops finished in dark brown walnut timber, another culinary
reference, this time to chocolate cake and fudge.

Expanses of white European marble are inspired by classic pastry making
slabs and these are juxtaposed against large clear glass display cases
housing a range of cookies, cakes, pastries, salads , sandwiches and
soups.

The marshmallow white forms of the classic Charles & Ray Eames'
designed shell chairs provide loose seating throughout the Toast cafes
and are clear design punctuation marks in the all pink interiors.

Panels of reflective mirror and extensive use of stainless steel within
display counter kitchens, dramatic and clear lineal planning, along with
a very strong design concept, are the trademarks of the interior designer
and are pivotal elements in all of the Toast outlets. Working closely with
the graphic designers, the Toast logo was taken and reapplied as a
wallpaper design, and where required, applied on glass facades to the
outlets providing semi transparent shielding to views inside and out - also
providing yet another recognizable branding image for the cafes wherever
they appear.

Toast identity
Mia Daminato and Jeremy Matthews

Mia and Jem are Sydney based graphic designers
Mia Daminato and Jeremy Matthews.

They design for both print and web, from identity design, signage
and posters to magazines, brochures and books. They have been
working together since they first met at University long, long ago
and still love what they do today.

Working closely with interior designer, Albano Daminato, they
developed an identity complimentary to the proposed interior
concept. Derived from a traditional Italian gelato wrapper with its
scalloped edge, the circular logo works like a label or stamp that
either bleeds off of the edge or wraps around the product or
package. This looseness of application reflects the playful, friendly
nature of the brand name Toast as does the use of pastel pink, the
dot pattern and the fonts.

These choices are all in line with the cafe aesthetic, which is
unique in the market place making it the corner stone to a brand
identity.

Applications include identity design, stationery, signage, menus,
livery and poster advertising.
